Abstract

This study looks at how transmission affects the development and perception of the Basran and Kufan grammatical methodologies. The article explains how the Kufans used aural evidence and Qurʾānic recitation to influence their approach, while the Basrans relied on analogies. The study contends that the distinctions between the two schools were not as doctrinally strict as later scholars claimed. Later transmitters, particularly Ibn al-Anbārī, often misinterpreted or twisted previous grammatical judgments, leading to the discrepancy. The study analyzes al-Inṣāf fī Masāʾil al-Khilāf and finds that many of the claimed disputes were caused by instability in transmission, selective citation, and anachronistic attribution rather than true rivalry between Basra and Kufa.
